Galaxies Course

Galaxies Course

Galaxies PhD course

Lecture times

The (probably) final lecture is Wednesday 27th June 3-5pm.

Lectures are usually every Wednesday at 3-5pm.

The course will comprise approximately 6 two hour lectures.

Aims

As a rough guide, I will aim to cover the following:

  • historical perspective
  • main galaxy properties and how they are measured
  • stellar populations
  • interstellar medium (nebular emission, dust, HI)
  • galaxy environments
  • active galactic nuclei
  • classification of galaxies
  • observed local scaling relations and their interpretations
  • variations in property distributions and relations with environment
  • environmental interactions
  • evolution with redshift
  • aspects of galaxy formation
  • semi-analytical models
  • outstanding questions

Lecture topics

This is a rough plan of what I hope to cover in each lecture.

  • Lecture 1
    • historical perspective
    • overview of galaxy properties: luminosity, morphology, size
    • magnitude system: measurements, definitions and issues
  • Lecture 2
    • overview of galaxy properties: colour, spectral type, kinematics
  • Lecture 3
    • stellar populations
  • Lecture 4
    • interstellar medium
    • active galactic nuclei
  • Lecture 5
    • observed local scaling relations and their interpretations
    • galaxy environments
    • variations in property distributions and relations with environment
    • environmental interactions
  • Lecture 6
    • redshift evolution of galaxy properties and relations
    • aspects of galaxy formation
    • semi-analytical models
    • outstanding questions
